The official currency of Vietnam was first introduced in 1946 by the government of North Vietnam, and after the countrys unification in 1978, it became the official currency of all of Vietnam. Note: the Vietnamese dong is a currency with a very low face value, which means that prices are expressed in large numbers. It is worth noting that inflation in Vietnam, although more stable in recent years, has been problematic in the past, affecting the purchasing power of the dong. Therefore, residents and businesses often prefer to store value in US dollars or other strong foreign currencies. The Vietnamese Dong is not widely accepted outside Vietnam, so tourists visiting the country must exchange their currencies on site.
