The official currency of Vanuatu - an island nation located in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean - the watu was introduced in 1981, replacing the New Hebrew franc, which was used in this region when Vanuatu was a French-British condominium. The exchange rate for VAT against the United States Dollar (USD) and other major currencies may vary and the exact exchange rate depends on current currency market conditions. Vanuatu has an economy based mainly on agriculture and fishing, as well as tourism and financial services. Agriculture is the most important sector and with crops such as copra, kava, cocoa and tropical fruits. Tourism is also an important source of income - attracting tourists with beautiful beaches, coral reefs and unique culture. The Reserve Bank of Vanuatu deals with the issuance and supervises monetary policy and ensures the countrys financial stability. Before the introduction of VAT, Vanuatu used the New Hebrew franc, which was replaced as part of the independence process. The watu is not divided into any smaller unit, which is quite unusual compared to most world currencies that have decimal units, e.g. dollar and cents.
