The official currency of Bosnia is a relatively young currency introduced after the Bosnian War in the 1990s as part of the peace agreements and economic reconstruction. Bosnia and Herzegovina operates a pegged currency system that requires the Central Bank of Bosnia and Herzegovina to maintain foreign exchange reserves covering 100% of the issued value of the BAM in foreign currency, mainly in euro . Banknotes are available in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 markka. It is worth noting that Bosnia and Herzegovina consists of two main administrative units, the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska, and the banknotes have different designs depending on the region.
